Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has announced the official launch of its suicide prevention tool for its social network and the feature will be available to users all over the globe.
Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, was speaking during the first ever Q&A session for the firm where he stated that the suicide prevention tool will be available to users all over the globe. The tool is designed to discourage people who feel that suicide is the best way out. The company has identified that most people who commit suicide often write posts hinting the suicidal tendencies or outwardly posting about it on their Facebook walls.
Users who find posts that suggest that their friends are experiencing suicidal thoughts can express concern by activating the tools. The suicide prevention feature is collaboration between Facebook and mental health services as part of an initiative to offer thoughtful services. The tools were previously available to some users on the social platform in parts of the UK and the US. The social network giant now wants the suicide prevention tools to be available to users on a global scale.
Facebook is also making collaborative efforts with local partners to make sure that the feature is available in all the languages that are supported by the social platform. In case the feature flags a post that suggests suicidal thoughts, friends to that person can flag the posts. The user who wrote the post will then receive a notification that someone expressed concern about their post. The tool will then provide other options such as a support, tips, a helpline and an option for the person to communicate with a trusted friend. There is also an option for the user to talk directly to a friend and the social site will even provide suggestions on what to write.
There is a high likelihood that the system will be taken advantage of by users who want to prank their friends through suicidal updates. Facebook plans to counter such instances through a team that analyzes the reports and categorizes them based on the seriousness of the case.
