After the latest earthquake in Mexico, Verizon has announced that it will be providing free calls on both the wireless and wireline services between Mexico and the United States so that friends and family in the two countries can remain connected in this time of tragedy.
“For the second time in just two weeks, residents of Mexico are recovering from another devastating earthquake. We know how important it is for our customers to be able to connect with their loved ones and we want them to know we are here for them,” said the Executive Vice President or Verizon Wireless Operations, Tami Erwin.
High death toll
For domestic wireline telephone customers, the free calls will be offered beginning Wednesday Midnight and end on Friday, September 22. Applicable surcharges and taxes will however apply. During the same period wireless customers on postpaid plans will, in addition to free calls, also not be charged for text messages.
Death toll from the earthquake has so far surpassed the 200 mark though the U.S. Geological Survey estimates that hundreds more may have died. Twelve days earlier around 100 people perished when another earthquake struck Mexico.
T-Mobile and AT&T
Verizon is not the only carrier that is offering free calls between Mexico and the United States in the wake of the earthquake. T-Mobile is also offering free calls and text messages between the two countries until September 22. And as a result of Hurricane Maria, T-Mobile is also offering free SMS and calls from Puerto Rico to the United States until September 24. Unlimited data will also be offered to those who are on plans that don’t have the feature. When hurricanes Harvey and Irma hit parts of the United States earlier in the month and late last month, T-Mobile also offered similar services at no cost.
AT&T is also offering free calls and text messages for its customers in Mexico as a result of the earthquake. The offer will end on September 21. During that same period, AT&T customers in the United States will also be able to make calls and send text messages to friends and family in Mexico at waived charges. And a result of the hurricanes that have hit U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, AT&T customers in those places will get free calls and text messages until September 24. Credits will also be granted for calls and text messages sent by AT&T’s U.S. customers to friends and colleagues in the two places.
